Excellent Kogai made by top ranked maker Goto Joshin.

Joshin was the 3rd Goto master, and is said to be the only one that rivaled the 1st Master Yujo in quality. His aggressive style is very well appreciated by collectors, his style of large strong carving shows his skill and confidence. His works are most sought after in collections all over the world. This kogai done in deep dark shakudo, shows well his skill. The well carved mons are very high relief and done perfectly. The shakudo nanako background is done excellently as well. The addition of the gold for the waribite shows that this piece was most likely custom ordered by one of a higher status. Joshin himself was a bushi, therefore he well understood the needs and wants of the warrior class. This attribution is not given lightly, so one can have confidence in the certification by the NBTHK. In a custom fitted box.

Nice large Ko-Kinko kogai from the Muromachi period.

Design is of shellfish among waves and is skillfully executed. The good use of gold uttori shows high level of material and craftsmanship, coupled with the dark black shakudo base make for a nice contrast to the gold-foiled design. The craftsmanship is very close to Ko-Goto work, and is actually possible be called as such. But in our opinion, this is classic Ko-Kinko workmanship of high level. Kogai would be great for collecting as is or for a high-level tensho mount.

Most likely from the mid Edo period, this is a very nice wari kogai. High quality wari kogai are rarely seen, standard kogai are more common among high level pieces. On occasion, special ordered pieces are seen, and are very collectable, or waiting for that mount that is missing such a nice piece. Made of dark deep  black shakudo, one would think quickly that this is a piece made by a top Goto artisan. That is quite possible, and in our opinion, this piece is either Goto or Yoshioka. This piece was definitely made for a high level person, as the use of the Kiri mon on such a quality piece easily shows this point. The use of gold for the end Kiri is very nice as a contrast with the black Kiri on the panel. In very good condition.
